The City of Sacramento is on the lookout for its new police chief, tasked with leading one of California’s largest law enforcement agencies and addressing community safety priorities. City Manager Maraskeshia Smith is encouraging residents to contribute to this important selection process through a community survey.
This survey focuses on public safety priorities, expectations for the police department, and the key leadership qualities desired in the new chief. Smith emphasized the significance of community input in making this decision. “Selecting our next police chief is one of the most important decisions I will make as City Manager, and I want our community to have a voice in that process,” she stated.
The city has enlisted the services of Ralph Andersen & Associates for a national search for the position, following the retirement of former Chief Kathy Lester. Currently, Zachary Bales serves as the interim chief. Applications for the position will be accepted until November 9, 2026, with candidate interviews planned for early December, and a final selection expected by late December or early January.
