Heightened immigration enforcement has stirred significant concern in Yolo County, particularly after a Woodland resident, Antonio Moreida, was struck by a vehicle belonging to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The incident occurred while Moreida was recording the truck during an enforcement operation on Tuesday.
In response to the event, local officials, including Woodland Mayor Tom Stallard, gathered in downtown Woodland to voice their discontent and support for the affected community. Stallard expressed his feelings of outrage stating, “The people who are doing this have no understanding of the Constitution.” The Woodland Police Department is actively investigating the incident, having gathered evidence from various camera angles including those from bystanders and doorbell footage. Moreida, who has a history of work for Yolo County, shared his sentiments during a press conference: “In a way I was glad that it was me and not another member of the community.” Meanwhile, federal immigration officials have contested the version of events stating that an “agitator” allegedly jumped onto the vehicle’s hood.
