Elk Grove bookstore provides a ‘third space’ where parents and children find connection

A Seat at the Table Books in Elk Grove has evolved beyond a traditional bookstore to become a community hub where individuals of all ages can freely express themselves and learn from one another. Owner Emily Autenrieth aimed to create a welcoming atmosphere for the LGBTQ+ community, which has grown increasingly important in light of her family’s own experiences. Her child, who is transitioning, has been a source of inspiration in fostering understanding and support for other families on similar journeys.

Regular events cater to families navigating queer identities, offering resources and camaraderie. Anecdotes shared during gatherings reveal shared hurdles, highlighting the need for safe spaces such as this bookstore. Autenrieth envisions A Seat at the Table as a vital resource where kindness and acceptance thrive, well beyond a profit-driven model.
