Joshua’s House Provides Dignified End-of-Life Care for the Homeless in Sacramento County

Joshua's House gives homeless people in Sacramento County a place to die with dignity

Dr. Marlene von Friedricks-Fitzwater has a deep understanding of the fears faced by homeless individuals, particularly the fear of dying alone on the streets. After speaking with nearly 180 people experiencing homelessness, she recognized a dire need for a compassionate end-of-life care facility. This realization led to the creation of Joshua’s House, located in South Natomas, which offers free hospice care to those without stable housing. The idea was personal for von Friedricks-Fitzwater, stemming from the tragic loss of her grandson, Joshua, who passed away while experiencing homelessness in Omaha, Nebraska.

Joshua’s House is designed to provide a home-like environment for patients, an alternative to dying alone in hospitals or on the streets. Curtis Burdan, a resident with congestive heart failure, highlights the significance of this space, describing it as a refuge where he can receive care and dignity at the end of his life. The facility, which features six cottages accommodating up to 15 patients, aims to expand in the future to further assist those in need. Von Friedricks-Fitzwater and her team are determined to ensure that everyone deserves love and compassion in their final days.
