Natomas Grandmother Fosters Community for Families Through Organized Walks

Natomas grandmother builds community families like hers need — one walk at a time

Elisa Amezcua started organizing monthly walks in Natomas after recognizing a lack of community support in her neighborhood. Her grandson, who resides with her, has autism and ADHD, leading her to seek a community space where families could gather. Since launching the initiative over the summer, these walks have not only provided fresh air but also a sense of camaraderie among participants.

The events, mostly funded by Amezcua herself, have grown from small gatherings to typical turnouts of 30 to 40 people, featuring local resource booths. Although the final walk of the year took place in October due to colder weather, Amezcua plans to continue with indoor gatherings, including a parent brunch and a sensory playdate, highlighting her commitment to supporting families in need.
