New Express Toll Lanes Planned for Sacramento Freeways

The Sacramento region is set to incorporate express toll lanes across key highways and interstates, aimed at alleviating traffic congestion. Proposed toll lanes will be placed on sections of Interstate 80, both on the Yolo Causeway and along Interstate 5, Highway 50, and Highway 99 connecting Elk Grove to Sacramento. According to urban planners, these express lanes will serve as a reliable option for drivers, allowing for faster travel at a cost.
Maps produced by the Sacramento Area Council of Governments indicate that nearly every major route in the area could feature these lanes in the coming decades. SACOG’s executive director, James Corless, emphasized that the lanes are necessary due to the region’s growing population and existing transit system challenges. The initial phase of toll lane construction is expected to begin with the Yolo Causeway tolls, anticipated to open by 2028, while further development will continue through 2035 and beyond. Environmental evaluations and public hearings are still pending.
