Bricklayers compete for shot at title of world's best

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — On Friday, twenty of the region’s elite masons gathered in Sacramento County to participate in what is known as “the world’s most prestigious masonry competition.” This event, the Spec Mix Bricklayer 500 Regional Series, was held at Brickyard Building Materials, where competitors aimed for the title of “World’s Best Bricklayer!”

Rick Yates, a sales manager at Brickyard Building Materials, remarked on the thriving industry, encouraging others to consider careers in masonry. Dubbed the “Road to Las Vegas,” the SPEC MIX BRICKLAYER 500 Regional Series evaluates bricklayers’ speed, skill, and endurance as they aim to build a 26-foot-long brick wall with exceptional craftsmanship within a strict timeframe of 60 minutes. Beyond competition, the event serves an educational purpose, with Rob Tepolt from SPEC MIX noting the importance of raising awareness about the masonry field. A high school team was also invited to participate in the day’s events. The winner will advance to compete in the World of Concrete 2027 championships scheduled for January.
